Chapter Thirteen
The next morning Mia woke early and went to her kitchen. She found she could think at her clearest when she was up before the birds and her hands were kneading some dough. With the skill of someone whoâs been doing it for a few years, she pounded the dough, then left it to prove in the kitchen whilst she made herself a coffee and thought on the day before.
Her mind was swirling with thoughts of the masked ball. The odd way Will and Ellie were acting, and Liamâs sudden disappearance. Miaâs head was beginning to pound and she decided she needed a couple of painkillers to get it to go away. She knew she had some in her bag and picked it up from where sheâd discarded it the night before. As she put her hand into the rucksack her hand brushed against something and she instantly knew what it was. Withdrawing it, she pulled out a pink note and smiled at the sentiment.
Being with you is my favourite thing
She stared at the piece of paper and shook her head. Sheâd left her bag in the room next to the kitchen all evening. Anyone could have had access to it.
But.
She looked up at her window thoughtfully, watching as dawn began to catch up with her. But Will was near it all evening. He hadnât left the kitchen â and if it wasnât him, then he probably saw who it was.
If it was Will, she needed to know why he was sending her notes rather than talking to her. And if it was him, what was the connection with Albert and his notes? Theyâd already ruled out this Albert being Willâs grandad. But it was too much of a coincidence, as far as Mia was aware, that two men â with over 50 yearsâ age gap â would both think of leaving her notes on pink paper. No, whoever was doing it was aware of Albertâs notes, and either was copying him in a bid to be romantic or they were copying in a slightly more sinister way. A way which meant they were somehow trying to impersonate the old man. Mia shivered. It wouldnât be something like that. She was certain.
Noting the time, she returned to the dough, knocked it back, and shaped it into a small cottage loaf. She left it to prove again whilst she showered and changed and by the time sheâd finished breakfast sheâd been able to bake it and get it to cool. Wrapping it in a clean cloth, she decanted some fresh coffee into a flask, grabbed a pot of her homemade strawberry jam from the cupboard and, satisfied she had everything she needed, left the flat.
It was always deliciously quiet when she left her flat, but early on a Sunday morning it felt like even the birds had lie-ins. Shivering a little at the chilly January morning, Mia pulled her coat even tighter around her, enjoying the warmth of the jacket
